GTINs, without the myths

What a GTIN is

The number under a retail barcode: 13 digits in most of the world (EAN-13), 12 in North America (UPC-A), 8 for tiny packs (EAN-8) and 14 for cartons (GTIN-14). One number per product, size and pack — never reused for something else.

Where it comes from

From GS1, the not-for-profit standards body, through its office in your country — GS1 Pakistan, GS1 UAE, GS1 US (gs1us.org) and others, all listed at gs1.org. Your company joins, receives a company prefix and numbers its own products. Fees are paid to GS1.

896, 629 — what prefixes mean

The first digits show which GS1 office licensed the number: 896 is GS1 Pakistan, 629 is GS1 UAE. They say nothing about where a product was made.

Numbers starting with 2

Free to use inside your own shop — for weighed goods or in-store items. They are not unique worldwide, so they cannot be used for products sold through other retailers or marketplaces.

“Cheap barcodes” online

Resold numbers may be registered to another company. Amazon and many retailers check numbers against GS1’s records and can refuse ones that are not licensed to your brand. Owning your own prefix is the safe road.

About SFIVA Codes

Is SFIVA Codes free?
Yes — every code on this page is free to make, download and print, with no sign-up: QR codes, EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, UPC-E, ITF-14, GS1-128, Code 128, Code 39 and GS1 Digital Link, and A4 label sheets. The paid services are for people who want the work done for them, or a QR code they can change later.
Do you sell barcode numbers (GTINs)?
No. Retail barcode numbers are licensed to the brand owner by GS1 — GS1 Pakistan, GS1 UAE, GS1 US or the GS1 office of your country. SFIVA draws codes for numbers you own and never issues or resells numbers. Our GS1 guidance call explains how to get your own.
Will these barcodes scan in shops and on Amazon, Noon and Daraz?
The drawing follows the GS1 standards — sizes, quiet zones, check digits and human-readable digits — so the codes scan. Whether a shop or marketplace accepts a product depends on the number itself: it must be a GTIN licensed to your brand.
What is the difference between a free QR and a Dynamic QR?
A free QR code holds its link inside the pattern: it works for ever, but it can never change. A Dynamic QR holds a short SFIVA address that you can point anywhere, any time, from your desk — and it counts the scans. It is active for a year at a time.
How do I pay for the services?
In the bag, like any SFIVA order: by card, PayPal, or bank transfer, JazzCash or Easypaisa in Pakistan and bank transfer in the UAE. Services are delivered by email, so they are paid in advance — never cash on delivery. Your private desk opens the moment the payment is confirmed.

Dynamic QR codes are ready the moment you have paid. For artwork, carton labels and SKU plans, the desk starts as soon as you send the details on your desk, and emails the finished files there and to you.
